Stratford-area artists revive ancient art technique

Stratford, OntarioFusion, Stratford area’s first exclusively encaustic exhibition, will feature works by four local artists working to revive the centuries-old practice of painting with wax.

Running from Friday, September 9 to Sunday, September 11 at Studio Straats, Stratford’s newest art gallery, the exhibition will feature paintings and sculptures by Anna Koot, Wendy O’Brien, Wendy Orr and Michelle Salter.

Encaustic art is created by using heat guns, blow torches and irons to fuse many layers of a medium made from beeswax.  The end result is luminous and luscious artworks.  Encaustic is a 2000-year-old technique that is enjoying a revival due to advances in methods and technologies.

Anna Koot is the type of artist who loves to see "what will happen if..." when experimenting with encaustic medium.  She revels in pushing the medium and delights in the results. Often creating representational works of art, she strives to have a painterly feel to her work frequently adding other media to the multiple layers of wax.

Wendy O'Brien is a mixed media fibre artist with an interest in encaustic painting, often integrating fibre into her artwork along with found and natural objects. Her finished pieces are sculptural as well as two-dimensional.  Themes she explores focus on the fragility of nature and our carbon footprint.

Lately Wendy Orr’s most frequent subject matter has been landscapes that reflect her interest in the local countryside.  She is drawn to light and textures and these qualities are present in her paintings.  The challenge of exploring new materials and techniques excites her.

Michelle Salter’s recent work is inspired by her love of nature.  As a child growing up in the Maritimes, she spent many hours in or near both the ocean and lakes.  Each body of water, every river, every brook is unique and has its own special memories for her.  From the Avon River in Stratford, to the Great Lakes, to the bays and coves of the Atlantic, each has touched her in its own way.  Besides, she loves the irony of creating a painting of water using fire.

The artists will be present during the exhibition.  This event is opened to all.

UNDERSTANDING ABSTRACT ART IS EASY!  BYHaving New Eyes

Art Show by Darlean Morris at Dr.Carol Venn’s Optometrist office,  opening April 19th.  Free Lecture, Free Lecture 7pm. 151 Queen St. E., St. Marys

Store fronts in St. Marys can be Art Galleries too!

Artist Darlean Morris’ idea of putting up an art show in Optometrist Dr. Venn’s large windows display cases seems to work. “Whenever I see an empty space, I just have to fill it”, said Darlean who is a Canadian artist living in St. Marys with her husband, Gary Austin.  She has her studio/gallery at 12 Water Street South, in the Opera House (MORRIS ART).  Darlean is an elected member of the Society of Canadian Artists (SCA), and is on their Board of Directors. Darlean is also a proud member of Gallery 96 in Stratford.

You can see Darlean’s art work in Baristas’ Café, The Westover and the Alton Mill.   She will be showing in Toronto at STUDIO VOGUE Gallery in June, and the Agora Gallery NYC, in October.

When artist Darlean Morris approached Dr. Venn for this opportunity to show her abstract art, Carol Venn was pleased to host this show especially when she heard the title, “Having New Eyes:  Abstracts by Darlean Morris - The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes, but in having new eyes”. (Marcel Proust)

Darlean has offered 25% of of sales to the Optometry Giving Sight Charity. “I’m encouraging other artists in town and members of the Art Salon Group of St. Marys to continue showing art at this venue”, said Morris.  Darlean is delighted that Dr. Venn, who opened up her new practice in St. Mays last June, is making the downtown core more vibrant. Carol is married to Mike Richardson. They have two children, Megan, five, and three year old, Luke.

Darlean Morris, who has her doctorate in arts administration, will be sharing her passion about abstract art by offering a free lecture– “Understanding Abstract Art is Easy ! by Having New Eyes” on Thursday, May 19th at 7pm. (Postponed to May 26th at 7 pm.) Morris hopes that she can persuade others to accept a new way of looking at something different by HAVING NEW EYES.

Please sign up or call Dr. Venn’s office at 519.284.4144 (limited seating) for the lecture.  For information about the art work, please call Darlean Morris at 519.284.3855.
